“The Dutchman” usually has me thinking of one particular winter. The winter of 1976-77 was especially brutal (for our part of the world, anyway), and my buddy, Roger Samples, and I were both feeling some serious cabin fever. We’d get together on those cold nights, hunkering down over one heat grate or another, and pick guitars for hours. We learned two songs that winter, both from albums by the great Steve Goodman. One was “The Dutchman” and the other was “Spoon River.” Only later did Rog and I realize both tunes were written by the same man. Michael Peter Smith was hero ever after.

Enjoyed the article, photos and of course, the music! Charlie, do I need another comma before ‘of course’? have to mind my grammar. I liked the banjo!
