Incredible memories of good times on the Delta Queen. The passengers and crew LOVED the Flood’s surprise appearance and talked about it the rest of the trip. Truly a highlight! And to this day I happily play my kazoo 🎶
Ahh, my friend, such wonderful memories for ALL of us! This morning I'm thinking about an afternoon eight or nine years or so ago when Joe Dobbs and I were sitting together, just the two of us, waiting for the rest of the guys to arrive so we could start a gig. We got to reminiscing, and I asked him what his favorite Flood memories were. After 40 years of playing with us, at the very top of his list was: "Playing on The Delta Queen." He didn't even hesitate. :)
Oh, it was indeed, Colin! And stay tuned. Future “Flood Watch” issues might talk about our other riverboat memories. Oh! Like the time our dear friend Phyllis Dale (“the last of the red-hot mamas”) invited us aboard to perform the evening show in the DQ’s beautiful Orleans Room. Just before the 9 p.m. show, we handed out kazoos to everybody in the audience, which folks immediately started deploying. What a racket! It was a musically sophisticated bunch; one side of the room was doing “Tiger Rag” with all the traditional Dixieland parts, while the other side of the room was doing elephant noises. Jazzou and his fellow cruise director, Mike Gentry, looked at each other in horror and Jazzou asked, “How do we get them to stop?” We laughed — “welcome to our world, guys!” — and then we suggested they go out and announce that “Homeland Security regulations require all kazoos be extinguished when the boat is in port.” It worked.

Good ol’ Joe! It was truly an honor to host The Flood on the DQ.
Wow. What a gig.
