We’re thrilled to say we got to warm up for John Prine at the Paramount Arts Center in the lobby. We got to meet him Back Stage and hang out with him till his food came. We had just eaten when he came down. There he was!
He came and set down across from us at one of the round tables.
We introduced ourselves and told him we were warming up for him in the lobby. I remember him saying, “cool.” Cindy then got his food order and we continued talking.
I told him that we always played Paradise in our set, and asked if he was ok with that? I’d never had the chance to ask any artist that before. That I always prefaced it by saying, “this next song is by one of our all time, favorite songwriters, John Prine.”
He smiled and acted a little taken back by that.
He said as long as we were doing a good job on it, “are you?“ I said, “well people always request it, so we must be doing ok on it, but it could just be your songwriting.” He said, “sing away,” and gave a big smile.”
It’s a moment we will never forget. He asked a lot of questions about where we’re playing. At that time, we were doing the State Parks, River Barge, and local First Fridays, and any place we could play in small cafés.
I remember him saying that he was a little jealous, “those are fun gigs to play.” Steve told him that he was welcome to join us anytime. He said that he wished he could. He’d do it.
Then it was time for us to go perform in the lobby. As we got up, he also got up. He walked around the table and gave me a big hug. He shook Steve’s hand, and wished us good luck on our songs. That it was nice to talk to us.
We thanked him and told him to have a great show, and to have fun doing it.
That night I remember that we played with renewed fervor. We left Paradise out of our set, as we always felt that to be in bad form.
He really had a great show that night. I also remember seeing you two there.
We were asked that night to perform as people went out of the theater. We were already packed up, when he came out to sign merch. He waved at us, and we waved back and told him to be safe.
It was such a good conversation earlier, that I remember that we both walked away feeling like we were floating.
There are some people in this world that just make you feel that way, and Mr. John Prine was one of them.
What a wonderful memory. Thanks, Karen, for sharing that story! We loved seeing the recent movie "You Got Gold" celebrating John's legacy. Such fun hearing the songs. Such diversity in what was among folks' favorites! :)
