"These Boys" Premiere Set for March 20
#569 / News Extra!
For everyone asking when they can see Randy Yohe’s award-winning “These Boys” documentary film about the 50-year history of The 1937 Flood, we’d like a word with your calendar:
Circle Friday night, March 20, and plan to be at Foundry Theater in Huntington City Hall, 800 Fifth Ave.
That’s when the good folks at the Appalachian Film Festival plan to make “These Boys” the featured film for the Friday evening session of the three-day festival. (The time for the screening has not been set yet. We’ll keep you posted on that.)
The evening will also be an opportunity to visit with Director Yohe and his crew as well as members of the extended Family Flood.
Honors to Date
While “These Boys” is not competing in the Appalachian Film Festival — it just didn’t seem fair, since the band has such a long history with the festival, including entertaining at its inauguration 22 years ago — being chosen as an AFF featured film is the latest in a series of recent honors for Yohe’s new film.
The East Village New York Film Festival made the film as its January selection for “Best Feature Documentary.”
Texas’s Austin International Art Festival selected the film as a semi-finalist.
In France, the Cine Paris Film Festival honored Randy with its best director award.
How It Came to Be
As reported, Yohe and his superb cinematographer Anthony Dean began working on These Boys in mid-2024 by filming the band as it partied with friends and neighbors at the Bowen House on a summer evening.
During the festivities, the pair interviewed current and former Floodsters and fans to capture the history of the band and to reminisce about band mates who have passed on.
Blending footage of the interviews and the partying with vintage audio and video from the band’s long and deep archives, cinematographer Dean completed the work last fall. Since then, it has been working its way through film festivals around the world.
… And In Other Flood News
After having to cancel a gig earlier this month because ice and snow, The Flood is so happy to be returning to its favorite Huntington venue next week.
If you’re out and about on Thursday night, Feb. 19, swing by Bahnhof WVrsthaus & Biergarten, 745 Seventh Ave., and party with us. The fun starts at 6:30. The food is great, the music will be hot and the company is just what you need on a winter’s night.
