The richest, deepest vein of music we have ever mined has been the extraordinary work of Bob Dylan. From The Flood’s earliest days — nearly a half century ago now — to just last week, we have faithfully tapped into tunes from darn-near every era in Dylan’s long career.
To celebrate Bob’s birthday, we’ve put together a special hour of music in our free Radio Floodango streaming feature that offers Flood performances from the past four decade.
The show begins and ends with our latest takes on Dylan tunes. We open, for instance, with a laid-back rendering of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” recorded just a few weeks ago and featuring the beautiful, imaginative guitar work of our newest Floodster, Danny Cox, on every solo.
And the show ends with Veezy Coffman teaming with Danny to rock the tune that by all rights ought to be our theme song, “Down in the Flood,” and then encore tracks, our tribute to Bob’s vision of Corrina and our 2024 take on “Make You Feel My Love.”
Sandwiched between those recent outings are recordings from performances at shows, jam sessions, parties and rehearsals, some dating back to the 1970s.
For example, we have Roger Samples’ duet with Charlie Bowen on “Tomorrow is a Long Time” and Jacob Scarr duoing with him on “One Too Many Mornings.” We have Doug Chaffin and Paul Martin just killing it on lesser known Zimmy composition like “Outlaw Blues” and “It Takes a Lot to Laugh (It Takes a Train to Cry).” And then, of course, there’s Michelle Hoge’s wonderful harmonies on “Peggy Day.”
Guest Artists
And guest stars? We got ‘em!
If you have ears and live in the Tri-State Area, you know you can’t even consider doing a Bob Dylan tribute without getting our dear friend Rob McNurlin involved. Rob is a life-long Dylan devotee, and we’ve got him here for two standout numbers, his treatment of “Blind Willie McTell” and of “One More Cup of Coffee.”
And, of course, in Floodlandia we still talk about the night the young Florida fiddler Paddy King dropped in to tune up our ears. From that remarkable evening, we have Paddy’s cool accompaniment to Paul’s lead on “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.”
