A dozen years ago this week, Floodsters were thrilled to learn that their band was named by The State Journal as one of the “55 Good Things About West Virginia.”
“In fact,” Charlie Bowen bragged in an email to his cousin Kathy Castner, “we were surprised to find out that we are the first string band ever included in the newspaper’s annual list of Mountain State treasure,” which it had begun in 1986, just two years after the paper’s founding.
In her lovely 2014 story about the band, writer Tiffney Henson commented, “The Flood has been nourishing listeners’ souls for more than 40 years. ... The variety of styles and sounds are like a buffet for hungry ears.”
Henson added, “The Flood is still together, making its relationship as a band longer than than The Beatles, The Kinks and even The Everly Brothers.”
The secret to The Flood’s longevity, she concluded, is “always being open to trying new things.”
